Wind and Kitesurfing
Sunset Beach – perfect conditions for Surfers
The wind conditions between October and March are excellent. The southeaster blows from the South / Southeast and is thus perfectly side-shore to side-off shore. The long and clean breaking wave which comes up between 1m and 4m breaks parallel to the beach in long distances. This makes it perfect for jumping and down-the-line surfing.

Da Heim was built by a surfer for surfers as the wind probability is best at Sunset Beach. The wind always starts here, mostly around noon or in the early afternoon and picks up strongly in the evening. When the wind gets stronger than 7bft, it is best to drive north to Big Bay, Hakgat, Melkboss or Yzerfontein. There, the wind is weaker yet the waves can reach impressive heights. On good days the waves are mast-high or even bigger.
Windsurfing in calm waters
Freestylers and flat-water windsurfers can windsurf on the lake in Table View close to the guest house. Advanced learners can practice the gybe, the waterstart or the tack between the top professional freestyle windsurfers. Kite Surfing, however, is not allowed on the lake.
Kitesurfing for experienced surfers
Kite Surfers prefer Kite Beach (5 minutes by car north of Sunset Beach, near Dolphin Beach hotel) where the wind is more sideshore. However, the spot is quite challenging for beginners as the shorebreak can be impressive. Downwinders are very popular. You start with the Directional at Sunset Beach and ride the waves down until the end of Kite Beach. When you are finished you just send a text message to the shuttle service www.downwindshuttle.de and get a lift back to the guest house at Sunset Beach. Amazing isn’t it?!
Kitesurfing for beginners
Much easier for beginners is the lagoon at Langebaan, 1h north of Sunset Beach. There are 3 top spots at Langebaan: The first one is Club Mykonos where the waves can reach 3 metres as the lagoon opens to the sea. However, you mostly find freestyle conditions there.
The second spot is the main beach in Langebaan in front of the restaurant Pearleys. The lagoon is about 500 metres wide and the water is very warm. Depending on the currents the conditions can get very difficult.
Then there is the wonderful spot “Shark Bay” named after little sand sharks which bury themselves in the sand … so just be careful where you tread … Don’t worry: these sharks are completely harmless! To get there, follow the main road until you have gone past a sharp left bend. Turn right at the sign to “Weskus National Park”. The lagoon there is knee-deep, the water is warm and flat. The wind is always a bit weaker which makes the spot perfect for beginners.
